A position paper is a short essay in regards to a country's/character's views and position on a topic, along with an analysis of the situation at hand. With this, they assist students with conference preparation by having them conduct extensive research to come to a conclusion on policies, positions, and plans their country/character may follow through with.
Delegates at RHMUN 2026 will not be required to submit position papers to be eligible for awards. However, we encourage delegates to do so, as it can help you understand your character or country more, and you will also be able to receive feedback from your dais upon request for future reference!
Delegates should aim to touch on their country/character's position on each topic present in the background guide. This means that for committees with 2 topics, delegates should be writing one paper that discusses both topics. For committees with only one topic, delegates will only have to write about the main event/topic at hand and their country/character's position on it.
Delegates should also include their plan for the committee in their position paper. For general assemblies, delegates should write this from the perspective of their assigned country. For crisis or specialized, it should be written in the perspective of the character. For further information on how to write a position paper, consult your head delegate or the internet.
We request that delegates attempt to ensure that their position papers are concise. Position papers should be 2-3 pages, double-spaced, and using a 12pt font. These page requirements refer to the entire paper, excluding the citations/bibliography.
Delegates should format the top of the paper using either the MLA four-line header or a full title page. The title page, if used, will not be counted towards the 3-page-maximum length requirement.
Delegates should cite their works using any professional citation format, such as APA, MLA, or Chicago. We strongly recommend that delegates use at least 3 reputable sources to complete their paper, although it is understandable that this may not be possible for some committees.
Papers should be submitted in the .pdf, .doc, or .docx (Microsoft Office Word) format. Please submit a copy of your position paper on your respective committee's email.
Please title your position paper the following:
[Country/Character Name] - [Committee] - Position Paper
If you have any questions or concerns regarding writing, formatting, or submitting position papers, please feel free to reach out to your committee directors or the secretariat at staff.rhmun@gmail.com.
