Rapid inflation has significantly hiked up the cost of basic needs, ranging from housing to groceries, all while Canadians continue to face the blunt of what is arguably the greatest threat of the 21st century—Climate change. Furthermore, the global political climate continues to heat up, leading to many costly implications on the Canadian public. Representing politicians with diverse perspectives from every corner of the nation, delegates will navigate these complex challenges and strive to formulate solutions that reflect the values and interests of the Canadian people.

The Economic and Financial Committee (ECOFIN) is at the forefront of tackling some of the world’s most urgent economic challenges. The committee will address the global debt crisis, which has driven millions into poverty, destabilized housing markets, and strained international relations. Delegates will engage in vital discussions on the role of key stakeholders, focusing on the development of long-term financial sustainability and exploring the impacts of deglobalization and economic isolationism. Delegates are called upon to propose innovative strategies and policies to reform global economic stability, promote sustainable development, and build financial resilience in an increasingly unpredictable world. 

The future of the global economy rests in your hands—how will you shape it?

 The year is 2003. The US has freshly invaded Iraq, the 5th Harry Potter novel has recently sold 5 million copies overnight upon publication, and Dolly the Sheep, the first* successful clone, has unfortunately passed. Dolly was a cloned female Finn-Dorset sheep that lived a normal and healthy life, dying by euthanasia after suffering from lung cancer. Her death has reignited global debates about the ethics, implications, and future of cloning and gene editing technologies. As the world reflects on these advancements, nations have come together to navigate the complex challenges they present, seeking to balance innovation with ethical responsibility. Delegates will examine the ethical questions surrounding cloning and gene editing, working to create international standards and regulations that consider human rights, social equity, and the environment. With the world watching, delegates will tackle profound questions of identity, morality, and what it really means to be human.

Will you pave the way to a disease-free utopia, or risk deepening class divides within society?

As the world watches the fellowship of heroes navigate perilous challenges to secure the future of Arda in the Third Age, a lingering tension brews between two of its members, rooted in a 6,000-year-old enmity passed down from their forefathers. Centuries of territorial disputes, materialistic grievances, and deadly battles have left the Dwarves and Elves at odds, their restlessness crackling like the fires of Mount Doom. Delegates will step into the roles of iconic figures, facing the deep-seated animosity between Dwarves and Elves, now intensified by the emergence of the Nauglamir, reigniting age-old rivalries and sparking heated debate over rightful ownership and heritage.

Will you choose to overcome ancient hatreds and build a bridge to a shared destiny, or will you let past enmities continue to divide?

As fears of Communist ideology spread across the United States in the early 1950s, many Americans were persecuted based on suspicions of Communist affiliations. Led by Joseph McCarthy and his supporters, efforts to punish suspected spies intensified. The trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg marked a pivotal moment in the Red Scare, setting a precedent for the treatment of suspected Communist allies. In the years that followed, numerous politicians, Hollywood figures, and authors faced persecution and censorship, leading to immense public discourse. In this committee, delegates will engage in discussions surrounding the Rosenberg trial, addressing media censorship in a stringent global political climate, while attempting to uncover the identities of the moles within their ranks.

How will you navigate the tension between justice and fear in an era of suspicion?

 The 7th century marked a pivotal era in Chinese history for Buddhism, highlighted by the fabled pilgrimage of Tripitaka and the widespread dissemination of sacred Buddhist texts. However, as time has distanced humanity from Tripitaka’s journey and the events of the Journey to the West (西遊記), the divine presence of the Chinese Pantheon has faded within their realm. Without the Gods' watchful eyes, humanity gradually forgot them. This growing faithlessness has become a beacon, attracting ancient demons once thought vanquished in the initial pilgrimage. In this committee, delegates will step into the shoes of Gods and Immortals, each with their own ambitions. 

Will you seek to purge the realm of demons, punish disobedient mortals, or reignite faith? The divine power at your command offers limitless possibilities.

Starting in the early 2010s, the Middle East erupted in violence, leading to riots, uprisings, and rebellions that shook the region. By January 2011, controversies surrounding the Egyptian government and president had reached a breaking point. Accusations against the current and past administrations include police brutality, suppression of free speech and political freedom, corruption, and abuse of state-of-emergency laws. Additionally, the government faces public grievances for allowing rampant poverty and food-price inflation to worsen the conditions for the lower-middle class. As of January 26, 2011, riots have erupted across Egypt. In this committee, delegates will shoulder responsibility as the Egyptian government, tasked to restore order to the region.
